Does the movie Eklavya deserve to represent India in Oscars?

The movie Eklavya has been selected to represent India for the Oscars. The director of the movie Dharm, Bhavna Talwar challenged the selection of Eklavya made by Vidhu Vinod Chopra in Oscars and the Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud issued notices to the Film Federation of India (FFI) to file a reply related to the case. According to the petition against the movie editor of Eklavya, Ranjit Bahadur was one of the jury members and this has resulted in a biased selection of the movie.

There have been comments against the selection of the movie into Oscars from many movie makers. The debate is among the directors. producers and critics who have seen the movie Eklavya .Anybody who has seen the movie may have a question that does the movie really depicts what happens in India today or is it a fictions story that gets intolerable most of the times during the movie. If compared to Dharm what are the elements present in Eklavya that make it better than Dharm? Is the selection biased and for how long this tradition of selecting movies in India will prevail?

Many people who have been to the western countries must have felt that the conception about Indians is of those who live in huts and mostly the hungry poor people. What is known of India outside is Rajasthan and Taj Mahal. Is it that Eklavya should represent the Oscars as it shows Rajasthan Haveli and Pagadi (cap)? In Eklavya creativity in the presentation of the story is there, the sets are beautiful and it shows a bit of Rajasthan that may be attractive to the judges in Oscars.

Mostly the international awards ceremonies have movies from India that are depicting Indian culture and its living style poverty driven. Many movies selected for awards are not depicting India in its today’s original form. The reason behind is that many developed countries could not digest India to be a growing nation. What is the credibility of awards we get by showing India in such way?

Other than the story from Mahabharata about Eklavya all looks unrealistic and confusing in the movie Eklavya. The movie shows an odd kind of family structure that is not present in Indian families. The movie also shows the guard to be loyal to kill his own son and then take him to get cured. The story looks foolish many times. The story of the movie is not attractive enough to hold you for long.

What the director wishes to deliver through the movie is really confusing for those who know the language Hindi. Nothing can be said for the judges who do not even know Hindi? or the director wish to make benefit from the confusions prevalent in the movie. We can wait for the final verdict from the court over the movie to come and wish the movie sent to Oscar will represent India in a better way.
