Zakir Hussain on Grammy Nominees list

in contrary to the hoopla created around indi-pop and Bolly-music, traditional indian classical sangeet has again given the nation immense pride. At a time when there are debates over the possible decline of indian traditional music in the near future, the great form of art gets recognition from the West. The 49th Annual Grammy awards nominations includes a familiar indian name on the list.

Reknowned Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain along with musician Aashish Khan have been nominated in the category of Best Traditional World Music for their album, Golden strings of the Sarode. The surprise entry is both an honour for indian classical genre and criticism against the Film fraternity for the sole promotion of “high-tempo-techno-fusion” music in Bollywood flicks.

Other nominees for the Traditional World music are: Music of Central Asia Vol. 2: invisible Face of the Beloved: Classical Music of the Tajiks And Uzbeks, The Academy of Maqâm; Endless Vision, Hossein Alizadeh and Djivan Gasparyan; Hambo in the Snow, Andrea Hoag, Loretta Kelley and Charlie Pilzer; and Blessed, Soweto Gospel Choir.

Meanwhile, on the western scene, British singer-songwriter James Blunt has been nominated for five categories including The Best Song of the Year for You ‘re Beautiful from his successful album Back To Bedlam. Mary J. Blige also won the maximum of eight nominations including best song of the year for Be Without You.

The Grammy night is slated to be Feb 11 at party-hub city of L.A.
