Durga Puja Celebrated by Bengali’s in Bollywood

Vijay Dashmi and Durga Pooja is one of the biggest festivals of Bengal and Bollywood has many Bengali’s who celebrate the festival in the form it is celebrated in Bengal. The nine days of idol worship and final day merging of idol of Devi Durga with huge band and show into the water of ocean, marks the sacred festival. In West Bengal every street has an idol and crowds on the streets result in traffic jams all over the places.

Mumbai city doesn’t celebrate Durga Pooja with the same spirit as Calcutta but the actors and actresses that belong to West Bengal celebrate the festival with the same spirit. The Bengali’s in Bollywood are Kajol, Rani Mukharjee, Bipasha Basu, director Anurag Basu, Predeep Sarkar, Rituparno Ghosh and there are many others who are celebrate the festival in their own ways.

This year the actress Kajol accompanied by her mother Tanuja and sister Tanisha visited the pandal arranged by the family members of Kajol at Santa Cruz in Mumbai. Bipasha Basu also wore a white saree and visited the pandals arranged by the family members of Kajol and Tanisha before visiting her town Calcutta during the celebrations. Rani Mukharjee also went to the pandals of the Durga Puja to offer prayers.

Abhijeet has started arranging the pandals along with his friend Anurag Basu and other Bollywood stars to celebrate the festival at Lokhandwala in the same spirit as it is celebrated in West Bengal.

The Festival is also celebrated by offering prayers to the goddess for nine days in northern part of India and many other actors like Sanjay Dutt also had the nine day worshipping of idol and offering prayers at his home.

Many people also visit various temples and Vaishno Devi cave during these festivals to offer prayers to the Goddess. The celebrations are also marked by Garbha and Dandia in western India. The festival also has the ninth day marked by Mela and singing prayers in groups to the Goddess. The festival is also said to be important for married couple to maintain their relations and it marks the time after which marriage dates are fixed by Hindus.
