Awards ceremonies and Film Festivals in India

The award ceremonies are increasing in Bollywood and more and more channels and business houses are identifying awards as attractions for their own business. But what is the validity attached to these awards and functions. On International level the most prestigious film festivals are of Berlin, Cannes, Venice and Toronto and the awards functions are Grammy.

None of the Indian award function can be compared to Hollywood’s Grammy. This year Grammy awards were famous for being more inclined to the foreign films and reasons was that Hollywood got more revenue from the foreign movies than the Hollywood movies. In India Filmfare Festivals are popular but the awards in the function are mostly for Hindi movies and that is selected by popular votes from Indian audience.

Most of the other award functions in India are more or less similar in the way the awards are judged and given. These awards function do not have a significant value attached to it as it had some years back. In current decade, the actors think that they did a good job by counting the number of awards they got for one work of art, then by getting just one award. These awards also do not signify that you have a long life in cinema or you will be remembered after ages. For many the speeches given while taking the awards are repaeated and look superficial like delivering dialogue in movies.

In the same way holding of Film Festival in India like the Goa Film Festival, is not having an international significance attached to it though it has many controversies attached to it every year. The Goa Festival has nothing to make it noticeable all around the world. The Film Festival in Goa is considered to be an important organization by Indian cinema houses but even after four year and promotions and other attractions attached to the ceremony the function is not as prestigious as many of International festivals.

It seems as if the organizers do not believe in art works shown in the festivals and so these functions have less importance attached to them and second thing is that selection of audience itself makes an award worthy. Except the film fares and few other awards functions in India, most of these functions that award cinema needs to grow themselves to praise others.
