Music Review: Namastey London(2007)
Producer: Vipul Amrutlal Shah
Music Director: Himesh Reshammiya
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singers: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Himesh Reshammiya, Jayesh Gandhi, Alisha Chinoy, Akruti Kakkar, Zubeen Garg, , Krishna, Sunidhi Chauhan
Label: Eros Music
nWhat’s new in the soundtrack of Namastey London? Let’s see…The combination of ace lyricist Javed Akhtar and controversial yet talented music director/nasal singer Himesh Reshammiya for the first time, experimentations with poetic intellect of MEHFIL MIX, the expertise of musical genius of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and RDB (UK based rock group). Another unconventional part about the album is the fact that along with 7 original tracks, there are as many as 11 remixes of the same! It is truly a different piece of work and grows on to you as you hear it more and more.

Chakna Chakna (Singer: Himesh Reshammiya)
Ratings: 7/10

The music album of ‘Namastey London’ opens with the ballistic ‘Chakna Chakna’. It has ’sufi’ elements fused well with ‘bhangra’ and pop. Besides this song’s addictive melody and rhythm, what makes it one of the best songs in the album is the no-holds-barred spirit in which Reshammiya sings it. DJ Akbar Sami’s remix version is a complete knock out as it fires all cylinders to burn up the dance floors.

Viraaniya (Singer: Himesh Reshammiya)
Ratings: 6/10

Viraaniya is a sentimental number, giving you a feel of ‘Tanhaiyyan’ The number moves slowly with the arrangements resembling a lounge outing and appropriate pauses coming at the right places. The mood is slightly sombre and keeps you hooked on. Poetry recitation by Javed Akhtar is matched by a mellow rendition by Reshammiya in the Mehfil mix of the song catches one’s attention instantly.

Main Jahaan Rahoon (Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Krishna)
Ratings: 7.5/10

The music of this number is fine paced and rendition by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan along with Krishna is exotic enough to make you love this song. ‘Main Jahaan Rahoon’ is a semi-ghazal romantic number with simple words that carry deep meaning.

Yahi Hota Pyaar (Singer: Himesh Reshammiya, Sunidhi Chauhan)
Ratings: 6.5/10

‘Yahi Hota Pyaar’ is another ‘Repeat button’ number from the man in top form. It’s a ‘ghazal’ with Reshammiya crooning in a low pitch and Sunidhi Chauhan joining him. It is truly meant for people who want their music to have a certain ‘thehraav’. The remix version is slightly peppier.

Rafta Rafta (Singer: RDB)
Ratings: 6/10

Rendered by R.D.B., a hot band on the UK-Bhangra circuits, it is yet another track seemingly set in a club/dance floor but moves on at a moderate pace rather than going ballistic. Also, the arrangements are kept under check throughout the course of the song. The song has been specifically designed for NRI listeners. The remix version of the song is still worse.

Annan Faanan (Singer: Jayesh Gandhi, Akriti Kakkar)
Ratings: 7/10

Unbelievable to sound, the most melodious musical work comes from the vocal chords of upcoming musical talents Jayesh Gandhi and Akriti Kakkar in sensuously poised “Aanan Fannan”. Reshammiya packs it tight with rhythmic patterns of “Soniye” (AKSAR) and it even scores well on lyrical contents and vocal excellence. The silent vibes that strikes flammable chemistry between lovers gets into bundle of refine poetry as Jayesh loud pitched vocals emotes out with grace in “Aanan Fannan (mehfil mix)”. It narrates well through megalomaniac poetic verses and sounds superior to original work.

Dilruba (Singer: Zubeen Garg,Alisha Chinai)
Ratings:4/10
‘Dilruba’ reminds of Reshammiya’s songs two years ago. The number is heavy on beats. Alisha Chinai tries to add more fervour with her singing. But the song lacks the melody to make a listener interested. It belongs to the time-pass category and can be given a few hearings, especially when it comes in a zingy remix version.

Album Rating: 7/10 Pretty innovative!
