Big names, banners, formulas and star kids failed in first half 2008

The percentage of hit movies in bollywood is 5% to 6% for the year 2008.This shows that bollywood delivered more than 90% movies that were flops. The current year is one example when most of the released films registered losses on the box-office. A total of 47 movies got released in bollywood in the year and the true hits of the year were rather unpredictable movies “Race and Jannat.” The film Jodhaa-Akbar also got screened for weeks but the money collected from the sale of tickets of the film was not more than the amount invested in making of the film and promoting the film.

The loss incurred by bollywood is more than Rs 1.5 billion that means the price to make the movies was over Rs 3 billion and the films revenue from the sale of tickets was not more than 1.5 billion that shows the bollywood film industry made a loss of Rs .1.5 billion in the initial half of the year.

In the year 2008 most of the bollywood formulas, short cuts, big known banners and star kids failed. Many famous directors and actors got rejected by audience and the debutants were not praised for their incompetence. The two films that were hits on box-office were fresh in script and had popular music.

What did not work on box-office were not just emotions, love stories and suspense but also comedies and known stars. The audience went to watch the films that had glamorous stars, popular music and a fresh script with all attractive cinematography.

The bollywood formula that included comedy (“One, Two ,Three”, “Krazzy 4 “ ,social scripts (“Khuda Ke Liye” , “Black and White” ,” Halla bol”, “Shourya”),emotions (“U,Me Aur Hum”) , Big Banners and known actors (“Tashan” ,”Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic “,”Sarkar Raj “) all these script s were not a hit on box-office. The average movies were “Sarkar Raj”, “U,Me Aur Hum,” “Khuda Ke Liye” and “Krazzy 4 .”

The fate of the movies showed that the audience value for money has risen and the audience will not be watching movies with any weakness. The recently released films “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” and “Love Story 2050” are youth based films and the Jaane Tu is getting encouraging responses from youth audience for the new way of telling a love story, the film has popular music and it is expected that the movie will change the trend of the year 2008.
