Bollywood Ishtyle of celebrating Holi….Rang Barse unlimited

Over the last five decades, Holi has lent resplendent colour to Hindi cinema. Earlier, Hindi filmmakers used the festival of colours to sprinkle the screen with a splurge of rainbow. The cinematic transition has smoothly changed a lot on the way holi is celebrated on screen and off screen.

The festival of colours has served as a backdrop to and catalyst for a gamut of emotions that screen characters have expressed. Emotions are unfurled right in the midst of the colourful swirl of Holi. Holi still remains a colour of celebration.

Ramesh Sippy, the creator of the classic Sholay used the festival as a medium to create a mood antithetical to the one that would prevail when the dreaded dacoits attacked the little hamlet of Ramgarh. The song, ‘Holi ke din dil khil jaate hain, rango men rang mil jaate hain’ still holds a place in millions of hearts.

The film industry has always believed in the liveliness of the festival, both on-screen and off-screen. Traditionally, some of the biggest names in films have held grand Holi bashes which have seen much camaraderie come to the fore — Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Chopra have been famous for their annual festivities. And this has spilled over into their films too.

Yash Chopra, the maker of the Yash Raj banner injected suspense in his bilateral love story Darr with the song, ‘Ang se ang lagana sajan mohe aise rang lagana’ with obsessive stalker Shah Rukh Khan disguising himself in colours to steal an intimate moment with Juhi Chawla, innocently wrapped up in the celebrations. Chopra’s newcomer-studded Mohabbatein too had a match-the-couples holi number.

Bollywood Badhshah Amitabh Bachchan’s most famous Holi number comes from Yash Chopra directed Silsila, which had ex-lovers Amitabh and Rekha dancing under the influence of bhaang while current spouses, Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar respectively, looked on, helpless.

Proposals to widows…lets play holi. Yes, If the happiness of Holi has been employed to contrast the sadness in a character’s life, the colours of Holi have also been used to evoke a feeling of rejuvenation.

Our filmy heroes cleverly grabs this opportunity to profess his interest to the widowed heroine. And filmmakers, of course, can’t resist the visual disparity evoked by the Holi colours and the widow’s weeds. Now, this is something that we call..Ek teer Do shikar

Holi has always had and will always have it’s own level of importance in our Hindi cinema. Holi plays the role of a story plotter to a mood weaver. The red, blue, green splashes have always left the audiences smiling and the producers laughing all the way to the Box office.
