Deepa Mehta to make a film on “Midnight’s Children”

Salman Rushdie’s novel “Midnight’s Children” is about incidents that happened on the midnight of 15 August 1947, when India got independence. The film maker Deepa Mehta has taken up the novel ,to plan for her next film and she is in talks with Salman Rushdie to finalize the script of the film. Deepa Mehta will be taking actresses like Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das and Seema Biswas for prominent roles in the film.

The 1981 novel “Midnight’s Children” was awarded with “Booker of Bookers” Prize and it is all time prize winning book of 1993 and 2008.The novel was also included in 100 best English language novels. The novel comes in three books and the story is about Saleem Sinai who was born exactly on the time when India became independent.

Rushdie takes instances from his own life to write story about the main protagonist of the film Saleem Sinai. The book says that he felt that all the children born on the night had special powers and the instances are linked to Indian situation, the problems faced by India, when it developed as an independent country.

Saleem spent a part of his childhood in Mumbai city and he said that he loved the place and his was a Muslim family who shifted to Pakistan after partition. Rushdie talks mostly about a Muslim family in his novels (since he belonged to a Muslim family and he writes how the relationships are intermingled).He quotes his experience in India and he gives his political view on events that happened in India ,after it became an independent nation.
