MOVIE REVIEW: RED – THE DARK SIDE

This Vikram Bhatt’s erotic thriller stars Aftab Shivdasani, Celina Jaitley and Amrita Arora. Neither of them has enjoyed box office success for a long time.

Vikram Bhatt last gave a hit 5 years back, Awara Paagal Deewana after which his next 7 films flopped in a row - Footpath (2003), Inteha (2003), Aetbaar (2004), Elaan (2005), Jurm (2005), Deewane Hue Paagal (2005) and Ankahee (2006).

Aftab’s last hit was Masti released three years back. Since then he has given 8 flops in a row - Shukriya (2004), Koi Aap Sa (2004), Deewane Hue Paagal (2005), Mr Ya Miss (2005), Shaadi Se Pehle (2006), Ankahee (2006), Darwaza Bandh Rakho (2006) and Jaane Hoga Kya (2006).

Amrita Arora enjoyed success 5 years back with Awara Paagal Deewana following which she has delivered six flops. Celina has had a mixed bag of success with only Apna Sapna Money Money (2006) being a moderate hit in recent times and Zinda (2006), Jawani Diwani (2006) and Tom, Dick and Harry (2006), all biting the dust.

Red has successfully generated enough hype due to its eye-catching promotional teasers. The movie is a let down on a whole after a good start. The movie falls apart because of its predictability. The audience knows it all before the happenings get going.

The story is powerful but only on paper. Here it goes, Aftab plays the role of Neel who is a billionaire. Neel is diagnosed with a fatal heart ailment which can be cured only if he gets a donor for heart transplant. He gets a donor in the form of Anahita’s [Celina Jaitley] husband, who has died in a road accident.

Anahita leads a lonely life after the death of her husband. Neel is attracted towards the beauty of Anahita and this one is a real passionate affair. Anahita informs Neel that her husband had been murdered. And Ria [Amrita Arora], Anahita’s best friend, is the culprit. She had an affair with Anahita’s husband and since she couldn’t marry him, she decided to eliminate him instead.

Neel murders Ria’s friend Rocky [Amin Hajee], who had murdered Anahita’s husband. But Neel loses his watch while committing the gruesome act. The investigation begins and the cop [Sushant Singh] is on the trail of those who had committed the heinous act. Anahita now wants Ria out of her way. Now, Neel is ready to get ‘Red’ once again.

Writer Manoj Tyagi has done a crappy job and leaves a lot of pot holes in the screenplay. Red- The Dark Side is Vikram Bhatt’s weakest product from his kitty. The climax is the lowest part of the film and a complete disappointment after the characters are well introduced in the first 30 minutes.

Himesh’s music is stale but is made spicy by the steamy lip locks. Cinematography by Pravin Bhatt is top class.

Aftab Shivdasani looks perfect for the role and handles his part extremely well. Celina Jaitley
is better than her previous films. Except for a few scenes, Celina looks alluring and plays a calculating woman with conviction. Amrita Arora is wasted in this one. Sushant Singh is no different.

Overall, the film lacks substance.
