WEEKLY DHAMAAL: SEX IN BOLLYWOOD – A bold move aheadWEEKLY DHAMAAL: SEX IN BOLLYWOOD – A bold move ahead Time has come when the Hindi cinema is evolving in terms of technique, style and concept of film making. In this entire hullabaloo, there is one thing which is definitely notable; it is the interpretation of sex in Bollywood. The depiction of love and romance has changed drastically over the years. Interpretation of love has become sex. And definitely our smart producers and directors have used the change to their benefit by selling sex. India’s film industry is starting to break decades-old stereotypes by dealing openly with sex. Today women has become an object of materialistic pleasure in most of the movies, while the male actors carry the film on their shoulders, the female actors titillate the audiences with their curvy shapes. Sex is used as a marketing method in most of the movies, buzz is created to publicise the movie and to meet the demands of diaspora audiences in the UK and America that were previously out of reach. Every second movie made today has lip-locks and scenes depicting sexual intimation, something that was rare previously. The major change is in the kind of audience that has now shown interest in wanting for more. Earlier, a steamy film would be shown in small towns and would be seen by men who came for titillation, but now urban women throng upscale halls to watch such films. In earlier films, only ‘bad people had sex, while good people fell in love’. But the phenomenon has been restricted so far to small budget films in Bollywood, which is known for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on sets, costumes and lavish song and dance sequences. Mallika Sherawat, the lady who has a lot of nicks associated with her like ‘sex bomb’, ‘bombshell’, etc. This is the diction that is being used to interpret sexual desires. Khwahish is known to be the first bold move to show skin in main stream commercial cinema of Bollywood. It is billed as a phenomenon in Indian cinema - with no less than 17 kissing scenes and portraying a young couple who are anything but shy about discussing their sex life. Then came the biggest grosser of its time, Jism, which told the story of a woman who was exploring her sexuality and desires. The list just goes with the ‘shehanshah’ of Bollywood, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan working in a film like Boom. The Indian audiences are no longer ashamed of watching a steamy scene in a full house. It can also be classified as a reflection of our lives. College girls these days dress to reveal more and conceal less. Nevertheless, I am not denying the fact that it can be vice versa i.e. influence of bold cinema. People watch English films if they want to see bold matter and even children are aware of the fact that an English film depicts English culture, not Indian one. Today’s youth find it cool to watch a sex scene in a theatre where no one complains as it is a multi grosser. Quizzing Dipesh Kothari, a 22 year old CA prospect and a regular Mumbaikar, I found out that thoughts are not stagnant and variety is multi dimensioned. As Dipesh puts it in his words, “If there was a sex scene, I would feel uncomfortable watching with my parents but I wouldn’t be fussed watching with my partner.” The expression of embarrassment is clear in these simple true words. Indian cinema has become powerful, going going global and international. We are adopting the cultures of Western countries to get name and fame. The powers of expressions have improved but the image of Hindi cinema is becoming a consumer’s affair. Last 5 posts in Main
